Comprehensive avalanche workshop

Program designed for those who would like to get all the avalanche-related knowladge, to safely carry out tours in the mountains.

Neccessary prior knowladge:

  • you do not need prior knowledge to participate in this workshop

Program consist of:

THEORETICAL PART

  • Types of avalanches
    • usualy conditions for triggering avalanches
    • factors affecting triggering
  • (Ski)tour planning
    • basic principles of exsisting in the mountains in winter
    • risk assessment at home - passive methods
    • risk assessment on the field, during the tour - active methods
    • avalanche forecast - where to find it and how to read it
  • Avalanche equipment
  • Measures and procedures in the event of an accident - search, probing, excavation
    • rescue organisation

PRACTICAL PART

  • two-way avalanche beacon test before the tour
  • avalanche beacon search training on the electronic training ground (see top of this page)
    • signal search, first signal, aircraft landing method search, fine search, MARK function, procedures in case of multiple (near) buried subjects, rescue organization in case of multiple rescuers
  • probing
    • marking the point with the shortest distance to the buried subject, perpendicular probing, distance between probe-punctures,
    • trying out different surfaces with a probe through a snow pack (helmet, ski boots, clothing, branches, ...)
  • excavating
    • selection of the starting point of excavation, excavation using the conveyor belt method, the work of individual roles in the mentioned method, basic handling of the buried subject

The theoretical part lasts about 3 hours and is carried out in the evening, the day before the practical work in the field. The practical part, starting in the morning, takes about 6 hours.
