The most beautiful couloir in the Slovenian Julian Alps towers above the Tamar valley. From Planica, we first ascend to the Tamar Hut and then continue up the slope toward the couloir. For the ascent of the couloir, skis are usually strapped to the backpack and we put on crampons.
The descent from the top starts steeply, and the terrain is fairly narrow at first. Soon the slope eases and the couloir widens — up to about 30 meters. We then enjoy a broad, open-slope ski run all the way back down to the hut.

One of the most easily accessible high-alpine ski tours in Slovenia. From the parking area at the top of the Vršič Pass, we head West across open slopes toward the saddle, from where both peaks of Mojstrovka come into view. If there is enough snow and the conditions are favorable, we can extend the descent by about 200 meters and ski down through Drevesnica toward the Trenta valley.

A ski tour on the sunny side of the Vrata valley, offering excellent views of Triglav, Stenar, and the surrounding peaks. From Vrata, we first ascend to Bivouac IV, then continue beneath the North face of Stenar toward Stenarska Vratca. From there, only a short, steep slope separates us from the summit of Kriška Stena.

The highest mountain hut in the Julian Alps — Kredarica — is an excellent starting point for several outstanding and long ski descents. For less experienced ski tourers, the ascent and descent from the Krma valley provides a good entry point into more demanding tours. More experienced skiers will enjoy the ski tour behind Cmir mountain, which includes several steep sections.

A remote valley above Krnica, suitable for experienced ski tourers. From the Vršič road we approach the Krnica hut, from where we continue eastward toward the North face of Škrlatica. We first reach Bivouac I and then continue to the head of the Velika Dnina valley. The descent can be done along the same route, or we can climb a short gully to the notch between Mala and Velika Ponca. From there, we ski through the Kotli cirque down to Martuljek. An excellent circular ski tour.

Cima del Cacciatore
ski tour for beginners

The starting point for the ski tour to Cima del Cacciatore is the upper station of the Monte Lussari ski resort. First, we pass the idyllic village and make a short descent down the ski slope, where we prepare for the climb. The route then leads through the forest and across broad slopes to the base of the gully that leads to the summit. The ascent through the gully to the summit cross is short but quite steep, requiring the use of crampons and an ice axe, so we leave our ski equipment below. The descent more or less follows the same route back to the ski area, and then down the slopes to the car.

Moses Notch, Lavinal dell'Orso notch, Cima Terrarosa couloir

The terrain above the Saisera valley offers an abundance of steep couloirs suitable for skiing — the Cima di Terrarossa couloir (the longest couloir in the Julian Alps), the Lavinal dell'Orso Notch and the Moses notch. All of these tours share the same starting point: the parking lot at the end of the road in Saisera. We begin by briefly following the cross-country ski track. The route then leads through the forest to a plateau from where we can see the entire crown of peaks and the previously mentioned ski descents. Depending on our chosen objective, we head either left or right up the valley.
In any case, the continuation is not easy. Short, steep sections await us before we reach the upper plateau at the elevation of the Stuparich bivouac, from where we can enter one of the couloirs. Suitable for experienced ski mountaineers.

Osternig

Although Osternig is not located in the Julian Alps, it is the easternmost peak of the Carnic Alps rising above 2000 m. From the summit, we are rewarded with a magnificent view of the peaks above the Saisera valley — Fuart, Montasio, Cima di Terrarossa, Cima Castrein, Nabois, and others.
We begin our ascent at the end of the road above the village of Ugovizza. The summit can be reached either from the northern or the southern side, depending on conditions and snow cover. In both cases, the route leads past the Nordio hut, known for its excellent culinary offer.

Sella Nevea Circuit tour
470 € | 1 client
260 €/person | 2 clients
210 €/person | 3 clients
Price includes guiding, the guide’s expenses, and transportation from Kranjska Gora.
One of my favourite ski tours in the Julian Alps. A solitary journey around the peaks above Sella Nevea. We first take the cable car to the Gilberti hut, where we begin the ascent towards the saddle beneath the north face of Kanin. From there, with skis on our backpacks, we tackle a steep but short gully that brings us to the southern side of the massif, where we have yet to encounter poor skiing conditions. A descent onto a large plateau follows, then an ascent in the direction of the Kanin ski area. We descend again across a fairly exposed traverse to the area below the Prestreljenik window, from where broad slopes lead us down to the ski resort. We then climb to the top of the ski area and ski back to the car. In good conditions, it’s also possible to descend all the way to the car beneath the north face of Lopa, which offers excellent freeride terrain.
